In an unexpected about-face, presidential candidate Paryur Hayrikian today filed a petition to withdraw a petition he filed yesterday at the Constitutional Court seeking a postponement of the February 18 election.
On February 9, presidential candidate Paryur Hyrikian and his lawyers visited Armenia’s Constitutional Court and filed a petition arguing that he had met with problems that were insurmountable.
Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) today stated that they found a “Nagan” type revolver during a search of the apartment of one of the suspects arrested in the Paryur Hayrikian shooting.
The National Security Service has confirmed reports that that has arrested two suspects in the January 31 shooting of presidential candidate Paryur Hayrikian.
According to Hetq sources, Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) has arrested two suspects in the shooting of presidential candidate Paryur Hayrikian on January 31.
Iskandaryan told reporters in Moscow that the incident might change public opinion regarding Hayrikian’s candidacy and get him more votes. Nevertheless, it won’t change the final outcome of the election, Iskandaryan said.
Paruyr Hayrikian will not file a motion with Armenia’s Constitutional Court to postpone the presidential election on February 18 according to his lawyer Levon Baghdasaryan.
At a U.S. Department of State news briefing yesterday, spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the U.S. condemns the attack against Paryur Hayrikian.
Having Armenia’s best interests in mind and holding to a deep belief in certain universal and inalienable rights, among which is the people’s right to self-governance through a representative and legitimate political system, I appeal to you, Mr. President and Mr. Prime Minister, to deliver to the Armenian citizenry its constitutional right to free, fair and democratic elections.
