Armenian Police Going After and Heavily Fining Those Spreading "Banned" War News

The Armenian Police reports that it has uncovered 40 cases where media and non-media sources have disseminated or published news about the ongoing Karabakh fighting that is banned under the country’s State of War declaration.

The Police reports that in one case, seven non-media people were fined 300,000 drams and an additional 700,000 for not removing the “banned” material.

Under the State of War declaration, restrictions have been placed on what and who can publish news about the fighting in Artsakh and Armenia.

In short, only government bodies can disseminate information on war casualties, the movement of civilians, etc., and that media outlets and social web posts cannot edit official news releases.

Furthermore, it is prohibited to publish statements criticizing, denying, questioning or otherwise devaluing the actions of state-local self-government bodies and officials (including the legal regime of martial law) to ensure state security (including speeches, publications).

Propaganda against the defense capacity and security of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh is prohibited, including the publication of programs questioning the defense capacity of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh.

(The Police, in its statement, does not identify those fined or examples of the "banned" material.)
